How to Choose a Water Filter When Backpacking?

You've hiked all morning to reach this ridge, and the stream running through it looks perfect. Cold and clear, straight off the mountain. However, clear doesn't mean clean.

How Much Water Do You Need While Hiking? 

A 2020 study tracked hikers on a mountain trail in 40°C heat. The route took under two hours, yet most hikers fell short on water by about 750 mL each. 83% did not drink enough to replace their sweat loss, and by the next morning, 75% were clinically dehydrated. A water filter works in a simple way. Say you're on a trail and come across a clear running stream, but aren't sure if it's safe to drink. Fill your bottle from the source, push the water through the filter, and what comes out the other side is clean. 1. Go Compact for Day Hikes, Prioritise Flow for Multi-Day

A day hike or weekend out doesn't demand much from a filter. Any compact option will do. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a filter for short hikes in clean-looking water?
Yes. The risk doesn't scale with how long you're out. One sip from the wrong source on a two-hour walk has the same result as one sip on a week-long route. Bacteria leave no sign in the water, and you often won't feel the effects until you're already home. A compact filter adds a couple of minutes. For that trade-off, it's always worth carrying.
What are the risks of drinking untreated water?
Stomach cramps and nausea usually hit a few days after the sip that caused it. By then, you're already home, and you likely won't even connect it to the water. What's upstream matters more than how the stream looks, and a water filter is the simplest way to deal with it. What is the difference between a water filter and a water purifier?
A water filter removes bacteria, parasites, and microplastics physically. A purifier goes further and handles viruses too, usually through UV light or chemical treatment. Can a hollow fibre filter handle cold and silty water?
Hollow fibre filters work by physically blocking bacteria and parasites, so temperature doesn't affect what gets removed. Cold water is fine. What you do want to avoid is letting the filter freeze while it's wet, because that can crack the membrane without any visible sign of damage from the outside. Keep it in your sleeping bag if temperatures are dropping, and if it does freeze, replace it. Silty water is trickier. The filter can handle it, but heavy sediment clogs the membrane faster. Run the water through a bandana or cloth first, and backflush after you're done. Cold and silty at the same time? Pre-filter before and backflush after, and most of the time, you'll be fine.
Can water filters be used on saltwater?
No. Salt can't be removed through filtration. It requires desalination, which is a completely different process. Water filters are built for freshwater sources like streams, rivers, and lakes.
