There is a point on every long hike when the water runs low, and the path keeps going up. Then the trail bends, and there it is. A stream straight off the mountain, clear, cold, moving fast. Everything about it says drink. The only question is whether you should.
The catch is that clear water tells you nothing. The waterborne pathogens in it, bacteria like E. coli, along with parasites and viruses, are almost impossible to spot without a test. They often leave no smell, no colour, no taste. One mouthful from the wrong source and you spend the next stretch of your hike with stomach cramps and diarrhoea instead of the view you came for.

What Is Actually In That Stream?
Clear water is not clean water. Most of what you need to filter out is invisible, tasteless, and completely odourless. That's what filters are for. In most open water, that comes down to three things:
1. Protozoa
Protozoa are microscopic single-celled organisms. Most are harmless, but a few species are parasitic and cause serious illness when they get into your digestive system through contaminated water.
Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are the two most commonly reported intestinal protozoa in natural water worldwide. The good news is that both can be removed with a physical filter that has a pore size of 1 micron or smaller.
2. Bacteria
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms found almost everywhere on Earth. Most are harmless or even beneficial, but some species contaminate water sources and cause serious illness when ingested.
Out of these bacteria, E. coli is the one you're most likely to run into out there. It's the clearest sign that water has been contaminated, and when it's present, there's a risk that other harmful pathogens are in the water too. What it does to you depends on the strain. At best, it will only be a rough couple of days with diarrhoea. At worst, let’s just say you might not enjoy your adventure as much.
3. Viruses
Viruses are microscopic particles that need a living host to survive and replicate. In water, they stay invisible and leave no trace that your senses can pick up.
Unlike bacteria and protozoa, viruses are small enough to pass through filters that are not specifically rated for them, while some filters are built and tested to handle them. So how do these filters actually work?

How To Keep Your Water Filter Working
Most filter problems are avoidable, and most of them start between trips rather than on them. Think of a damp filter left in a pack for six months, or a membrane that froze and cracked without anyone noticing.
Here are a few tips to keep your filter ready to use:

Pre-filter murky water: If the source looks silty or cloudy, run it through a bandana or cloth before it reaches the membrane.

Never let it freeze: Ice crystals could crack the membrane permanently with no visible sign of damage from the outside. In sub-zero conditions, it’s best to sleep with your filter.

Store it dry: Flush with clean water after each trip and let it fully dry before it goes back in the pack to avoid moulding.
Do these consistently, and you will get the most life out of your filter. That said, gear fails, and it rarely picks a convenient moment to do it. Worth knowing what your options are when it does.
What To Do If Your Filter Stops Working?
Start by checking the filter itself, since most of the time the problem is the container and not the membrane. Look for a cracked pouch, a busted thread, or a blocked mouthpiece. If the filter element looks intact, rig it with whatever you have and make it work.
If it is genuinely done, boiling is your fallback. Run murky water through a piece of clothing first to catch the sediment, then bring it to a boil for at least a minute, or a little longer if you are at altitude. Boiling kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites, though it will not remove chemical contaminants. If you are near farmland or developed land, that is worth keeping in mind.
